KINGSTON, R.I.– The LSU men’s golf team shot a 11-over par 291 on Tuesday at the Adams Cup of Newport to tie for fifth place after one round of play, 12 shots off the lead.

The Tigers are 12 strokes behind leader Marshall, which posted a 1-over 279 on Tuesday. The tournament, which will conclude on Wednesday, is being played at two separate courses. Tuesday’s round was held at the Newport Country Club and Wednesday will shift to Point Judith Country Club. The 17-team field will tee off at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

LSU was led by true freshman Tucker Ervin, a Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native on Tuesday. Ervin, in his LSU debut, shot a 1-over 71, and. Junior Garrett Prather shot a 2-over 72 in round one. Jason Horrell, a redshirt freshman also making his first appearance for LSU shot a 75. Chip Lee added a 73 and John Humphries shot an 82.

LSU now has had three freshman see tournament action this season, including two true freshman. The Tigers survived a long layoff from action to play good rounds against a very tough field. The Adams Cup field includes 19th-ranked BYU, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, as well as Georgia State and Central Florida and host Rhode Island.

LSU’s next tournament will be the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate Oct. 15-16 at Tampa, Fla.
