BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s cross country team came up with its first title of the year, while the Tigers finished third at the LSU Invitational at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge.
“I think we came out today and competed very well,” said LSU cross country coach Mark Elliott. “We finished third in this meet with both teams a year ago so I think we’ve shown good improvement this season so far. It’s great for our women to not only be able to win a title, but do it at home Our men finished third again, but were only two points away from finishing second. We had a very good meet overall.”
The Lady Tigers used a third place finish from Susanne Strunz and a well-balanced attack across the board to pick up the team title with 45 points, outdistancing runner-up McNeese and third place finisher Tulane.
Strunz completed the women’s 6-kilometer course in 22 minutes 02.12 seconds to lead the Lady Tigers. Mariam Burnett finished sixth and Lindsay Daigle ninth to give the Lady Tigers three top 10 finishes.
Katie Denton and Katrina Flanders finished 12th and 15th respectively to round out the Lady Tigers top five finishers.
Sita Waru of McNeese won the individual title in a time of 21:30.74 followed by Eva Lustigova of Tulane.
On the men’s side, the Tigers finished third behind Tulane and McNeese, while Likhaya Dayile finished second for the third time in as many outings this year.
Dayile finished behind rival Solomon Kandie of Tulane who took advantage of a pedestrian pace in the early stages of the race and out-kicked the Tiger standout down the stretch. Kandie won the men’s 8k race in a time of 25:02.66, while Dayile posted a time of 25:08.65.
Jimmy Wiggins finished sixth, while Ryan Raiford finished ninth, giving the Tigers three top 10 finishers. Brandon Guillory placed 16th and Jarrett Roche’ 17th to round out the Tigers’ top five finishers.
Tulane finished with 31 points, followed by McNeese with 46 and LSU with 48.
LSU returns to action next Saturday in its final tune-up before the SEC Championships, when both squads travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chilli Pepper Invitational.
