BATON ROUGE — Amanda Norton has been named assistant swimming coach at LSU, head coach Jeff Cavana announced Wednesday.
Norton, 26, is a native of Melbourne, Australia. She comes to LSU after serving as graduate assistant women’s swimming coach at Eastern Michigan University for the past three years. Norton earned her master’s degree in exercise physiology while at Eastern Michigan. Norton attended Deakin University and swam independently at the time. The school did not offer swimming as a college sport.
“I like working with both men and women here”, said Norton. “When I first came here (Michigan) it was a real culture shock, going from a warm place to a place it snows all the time.”
The opportunity to coach both men and women at LSU influenced Norton to accept the job at LSU. Norton coached athletes at the Wolverine Swim Camp at the University of Michigan each of the last three summers. There she coached under the guidance of Jon Urbanachek, head men’s swimming coach, and Jim Richardson, head women’s coach. Urbanachek is a former Olympic coach.
“Amanda has the ability to be a great leader”, said head coach Jeff Cavana. “She is a good stroke technician, she looks at the swimmers flaws and corrects them.
“She has a good rapport with the men and women, and I am real excited about having her here”, Cavana said.
