KINGSTON, R.I. — The LSU men’s golf team travels to Narragansett, R.I., to participate in the eighth-annual Adams Cup of Newport on Tuesday.
The tournament, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, runs through Wednesday and will be held at two separate courses. Rounds one and two will be held Tuesday at the Newport Country Club. Wednesday’s final round will be played at the Point Judith Country Club. The teams will tee off at 8 a.m. each day.
LSU will join 16 teams at the tournament, including 19th-ranked BYU and two fellow Southeastern Conference schools, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. The 2000 champion, Virginia Tech, will not return for this season’s event, so a new champion is guaranteed.
LSU has been absent from action for nearly a month. The Tigers finished eighth at the Cleveland Golf Kiawah Island Intercollegiate Sept. 10-11 at Kiawah Island, S.C., their first tournament of the season. LSU shot a 6-over 870 to finish 23 strokes behind champion College of Charleston.
Junior Garrett Prather was LSU’s top finisher at South Carolina, shooting a 2-under 214 to finish tied for 15th. True freshman Heath West made his LSU debut and shot a 2-over 218 to finish 25th. John Humphries finished 27th, and Nathan Goulding and Neil Self tied for 57th.
Two freshman will see their first action for LSU at the Adams Cup. True freshman Tucker Ervin, from Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and redshirt freshman Jason Horrell from Martinville, Ind., will join Prather, Humphries and junior Chip Lee in the lineup.
“We are going to play two freshman in Rhode Island, so I am interested to see how they play”, said LSU head coach Greg Jones.
Jones chose the lineup based on how his players played last week in practice. The players played several rounds of golf, and the players who posted the best scores qualified for the Adams Cup.
“We chose the lineup based on playing in practice, and the guys had to qualify. We will have played eight guys after two tournaments, which shows we have good depth on this team.”
LSU’s next tournament is the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate Oct. 15-16 at Tampa, Fla., one of three October tournaments. The Tigers will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule with the ninth annual Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate Oct. 29-30 in Baton Rouge.
