HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The LSU soccer team earned its first road victory of the season on Sunday, as the Tigers downed the Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs in overtime, 1-0, at the Louis Crews Memorial Stadium in Huntsville, Ala.
“We didn’t really play that well today,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “But playing on the road is always tough, and a win is a win. I’d take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day. Even though it took us until overtime to get the win, we dominated every facet of the game throughout regulation.”
Halfway into the overtime frame LSU’s Elizabeth Marschall gathered a pass from Laura Klatter and rifled the game-winning shot past the Lady Bulldog goalie. The goal was Marschall’s second of the season and increased her overall point total to seven in the 2001 campaign. Klatter recorded the first assist of her collegiate career on the play.
The Tigers improved to 5-2-1 with the victory and begin preparations for this weekend’s Southeastern Conference contests against Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Alabama A&M dropped its third-straight game versus an SEC opponent on Sunday. The Lady Bulldogs were beaten by Alabama and Ole Miss last week.
In her first start of the young season, LSU redshirt frshman goalkeeper earned the shutout victory.
LSU’s non-conference battle against Alabama A&M marked the Tigers’ second-straight overtime game. On Wednesday, LSU tied Louisiana-Monroe, 2-2, on the road. The Tigers are 5-1-1 versus non-conference opponents this season. South Alabama handed the Tigers their lone non-conference loss of the year in a hotly-contested 2-1 battle in Mobile, Ala.
The LSU soccer team will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 5, as the Tigers host the Ole Miss Lady Rebels at 7 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Complex.
