Late ULM Goal Forces 2-2 Tie With Tigers

MONROE, La. — The LSU soccer team recorded its first tie in nearly two years on Wednesday, as the Tigers finished their second road game of the season knotted, 2-2, versus the Louisiana-Monroe Indians.

“I have to give a lot of credit to Louisiana-Monroe,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “Every time we would score, they would come back and tie the game. They scored their last goal with three minutes left in regulation. I think that we played well and it was definitely a learning experience for us.”

At the 87:03 mark in Wednesday’s contest, Louisiana-Monroe’s Crystal Johnston scored her second goal of the season to even the score at 2-2. The non-conference battle resulted in a tie as the teams remained even after two overtimes at Brown Stadium in Monroe, La.

With the tie, the Tigers earned a 4-2-1 overall record on the season, while ULM finished the evening at 4-2-2. The standstill ended LSU’s nine-game winning streak over in-state opponents and marked the Tigers’ first tied contest since Oct. 3, 1999. LSU also finished that game knotted at 2-2 on the road against Oklahoma.

“We had a lot of opportunities to score tonight, but we just couldn’t capitalize on all of our chances,” Fotopoulos said. “I think that we had something close to thirty shots in the game and we played well on their field, which is a lot smaller than we’re used to, but a tie is still good for us as a team.”

LSU’s leading scorer from last season, Kara Dean, earned her second goal of the season at the 74:37 mark in the game to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.

With the score, Dean moved closer to the LSU all-time career goals record held by former Tiger great Jackie Cooper. Dean now owns 18 career goals and is halfway to Cooper’s elusive total of 36.

The LSU soccer team will remain on the road for its next contest as the Tigers head to Huntsville, Ala., for another non-conference match-up versus the Alabama A&M Bulldogs at noon on Sunday.
