BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team is eager to face the Auburn-Montgomery Senators on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference battle at the LSU Soccer Complex.
“This is another must-win game for us,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “We were able to beat Nicholls State on Friday, but we need to complete our goal of winning both matches this weekend.”
The Tigers enter Sunday’s matchup with an overall record of 3-2 on the season. By recording a 3-0 victory over Nicholls State in its previous contest, LSU improved its 2001 non-conference record to 3-1. The Tigers’ lone non-conference loss of the season was a 2-1 defeat on the road against South Alabama.
Auburn-Montgomery, the defending Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference Champions, heads into Baton Rouge with an overall record of 3-5. After pounding Brewton-Parker College, 7-0, on Sept. 15, the Senators faltered their last time out against William Carey College. William Carey scored late in the second half of the contest to earn a 1-0 victory.
Sunday’s game will be the first meeting between LSU and Auburn-Montgomery and the Tigers are undefeated at home versus non-conference opponents this season. The 16th-ranked Florida Gators handed the LSU soccer team its only home loss of the year. The Gators won by a score of 3-0.
“Auburn-Montgomery is a very talented team,” Fotopoulos said. “They won their conference championship last season and they also won their conference’s preseason tournament. They will be tough because they have some good players who are used to winning games.”
