ATHENS, Ga. — At the Southern Collegiate Tennis Championships, three LSU men’s tennis players including two highly touted freshmen were victorious in the Tigers’ season opening tournament of individual play on Friday in Athens, Ga.
Freshman Jason Hazley, seeded 9-12 in Division II of the singles draw, defeated Trevor Short of Middle Tennessee, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round of the tournament, while fifth-seeded LSU freshman Peter Richman beat Brent McCombe, 6-3, 6-2, in another Division II first-round match.
Sophomore Sebestian Rutka also won in the first round of Division II play, defeating Alex Hoyem of Murray State, 6-3, 6-3.
In Division I singles play, LSU’s Bryan Fisher was beaten by seventh-seeded Olivier Levant of Florida, 6-3, 6-3, while Sanjin Sadovich was upended by another Florida player, Eleazar Magallan, 6-3, 6-4
Both Fisher and Sadovich will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday, while Rutka, Richman and Hazley advanced to the second round of the 64-player Division II singles draw.
Play continues at the Southern Collegiates on Saturday, with championship play completing on Monday.
