BATON ROUGE — King Mott, a five-time SEC champion during his time with the LSU track and field program from 1956-58, passed away in his home in Monroe last Friday from a rare muscular disease. He was 66.
Mott helped the Tigers to three SEC team titles during his time, as LSU won the inaugural SEC Indoor title in 1957, while taking the outdoor titles in 1957 and 1958.
In 1957, Mott helped the Tigers to the crown by winning the 440-yard title and running a leg on the mile relay. A year later, he was crowned 880-yard champion indoors, while helping the Tigers win the mile relay both indoors and outdoors.
After graduating from LSU in 1958, he returned to the Monroe area, settling in Oak Ridge, where as a farmer, he produced cotton, rice and soybeans. He had been an agricultural real estate broker and agent with Mott Realty, Inc., since 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Turpin Mott of Monroe, La.; daughter Karen Leigh Mott of Tucson, Ariz. and partner, Laura Hubbard; son Woodard King Mott, Jr. of London, England and wife, Marguerite; daughter Janie Mott Holland of Grand Rapids, Mich., and husband, Robert; and son Harry Turpin Mott, of Atlanta, Ga., and wife, Michelle.
