Toefield Named LSWA Offensive Player of the Week

RUSTON, La. — Two players that led their respective teams to big wins over the weekend were tabbed Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association College Football Players of the week on Monday.

LSU sophomore running back LeBrandon Toefield was the unanimous LSWA Offensive Player of the Week selection after scoring four touchdowns in a 31-14 Tiger win over Utah State.

The Independence, La., native rushed for a career-high 183 yards and his four touchdowns rank as the second-highest single-game total in school history.

Toefield’s 183 yards rank as the 14th best single game total in LSU football history. The sophomore also became the first player in modern day LSU history to score three or more rushing scores in back-to-back games after scoring three in LSU’s season opener against Tulane and scoring four times versus Utah State.

Northwestern State safety Eric Louis tallied seven tackles in a 55-17 Demon victory over Henderson State on Saturday.

The Zachary, La., native also blocked a point that NSU recovered at the 6-yard line that launched a spree of 28 Demon points in 1:32 as NW State raced to a 42-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The nominees for the weekly award are made by the sports information directors at the state’s football playing institutions and then voted on by a panel of LSWA members.

Other defensive players nominated included: LSU defensive back Randall Gay, Louisiana-Lafayette linebacker Ricky Calais and Louisiana Tech linebacker Gerome Wallace.
