Toefield Starts Preseason Game For Jaguars

Coaching Staff Names Players of the Game

BATON ROUGE — The LSU coaching staff has selected five players – two on offense and defense and one on special teams — as the Tigers’ players of the week following the 31-14 win over Utah State on Saturday in Tiger Stadium.

On offense, tailback LaBrandon Toefield and guard Dwayne Pierce earned the award. Toefield rushed for a career-best 183 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. The four touchdowns rank as the second-most in school history.

One of Toefield’s touchdowns was a 70-yard run just before halftime. Pierce graded out at 90 percent as he helped pave the way for 504 yards of total offense, including 275 on the ground for the Tigers.

Defensively, linebacker Bradie James and defensive tackle Chad Lavalais were recognized for their performance. James recorded five tackles in the contest, while Lavalais had a pair of stops as well as deflected pass.

James and Lavalais each played a key role in holding Utah State to just 91 yards rushing in the game, the second straight contest in which the Tigers have held their opponent to under 100 rushing yards.

Walter Moreham earned player of the week honors on special team after recording a pair of tackles on kickoff coverage, including one stop inside the 20-yard line.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they play host to Auburn at 8 p.m. in Tiger Stadium in a game televised nationally by ESPN2.
