Women’s Basketball Staff to Host Coaching Clinic

BATON ROUGE — Championship coaches on both the college and professional level highlight the LSU coaching clinic, sponsored by the LSU women’s basketball coaching staff, set for Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Maravich Assembly Center.

The 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. event carries a $25 registration fee, which includes breakfast, lunch and a clinic notebook. The first 100 to register will receive a Lady Tiger basketball clipboard.

Speakers for the event besides Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer and LSU head coach Sue Gunter include Billie Moore, Van Chancellor and Candi Harvey.

Moore coached the 1976 U.S. Women’s Olympic Team and had a career coaching record of 436-196. She coached 16 seasons at UCLA, winning the national title in 1978 to go with a 1970 national title at Cal-State Fullerton. She was a 1999 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Chancellor is well known in the Southeastern Conference for his 19 seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss where he took the Rebels to 14 NCAA appearances, before winning four titles in the first four years of the WNBA as the head coach of the Houston Comets. He has been named Coach of the Year in the WNBA three times.

Harvey is also well known in the South, although she is presently the head coach of the Utah Starzz of the WNBA. Harvey built programs at Arkansas State, Stephen F. Austin, Tulane and Texas A&M. She took over the Starzz this season after a 5-8 start and posted a 14-5 mark and a spot in the playoffs with a team which featured former LSU All-American Marie Ferdinand.

“We are extremely excited to have Billie, Van and Candi as part of our coaching clinic,” said Gunter. “They are not only outstanding coaches, but great clinicians as well.”

Gunter’s coaching staff of Pokey Chatman, Carla Berry and Bob Starkey, as well as the members of the LSU women’s basketball team, will take part in live demonstrations on the Assembly Center floor.
