Lady Tiger Golfer Harris Named Woman of the Year

BATON ROUGE — Former LSU golfer Katy Harris, who earned first team SEC and All-American honors a year ago as a senior, was selected the NCAA Woman of the Year honoree for the state of Louisiana.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. The state winners this year represent 14 sports, with 29 student-athletes chosen from Division I, nine from Division II and 13 from Division III.

A committee composted of representatives from member schools selected the state winners, and that same committee will select 10 finalists from among those winners. Selections are based on grade-point averages, athletics achievements and community service. The 10 finalists will be announced later this month.

A national winner will be selected by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics from the 10 finalists and the winner will be announced at the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year dinner, Oct. 21, in Indianapolis.

Harris, a native of South Bend, Ind., had a record-breaking year, highlighted by a school and SEC record 6-under 66 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She would go on to finish with the lowest career stroke average for her four years in LSU golf history as well as the lowest single season average as she closed her career with a third-place finish in the 2001 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships.

This marks the second consecutive year an LSU golfer has been named the Woman of the Year for Louisiana, as Lisette Lee won the award in 2000.
