BATON ROUGE — LSU tailback LaBrandon Toefield has been selected as one of 43 preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, the SMU Athletic Forum announced on Saturday.
The Doak Walker Award annually goes to the nation’s top collegiate running back. Former TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson won the award last year.
Toefield, who is one of just three sophomores on the preseason list, was named first team freshman all-America last year after rushing for a team-best 682 yards and five touchdowns despite missing LSU’s last two games.
Toefield also earned freshman all-SEC honors for the Tigers and his 74-yard touchdown run against Tennessee last September earned ESPN Play of the Week honors.
The Doak Walker Award will trim the list of 43 candidates to eight on Nov. 8 with the winner being announced on ESPN’s College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6.
