Former Track Athletes Win Gold at World Championship

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada — Former LSU track and field All-Americans Derrick Brew and Debbie Parris helped their respective countries to gold medals in the 4×400-meter relay Sunday evening, as the IAAF World Championships concluded at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Brew, the two-time SEC 400-meter champion ran the third leg, as the United States easily outdistanced the Bahamas to win the men’s title in a world-leading time of 2 minutes 57.54 seconds.

Brew, the school record-holder in the 400-meter dash both indoors and outdoors, was joined by Leonard Byrd, Antonio Pettigrew and Angelo Taylor who anchored.

Parris helped her native Jamaica win the women’s title by running the third leg on the squad that won in a world-leading time of 3:20.65. Earlier in the week, Parris had just missed winning a medal in the 400-meter hurdles, placing fifth.

Parris, the 1993 and 1994 NCAA 400-meter hurdles champion while at LSU, was joined by Sandie Richards, Catherine Scott and Lorraine Fenton.
