BATON ROUGE — The second and final day of newcomer-only practices was again moved indoors due to to heavy rain on the Ponderosa on Wednesday afternoon.

The platoon of 29 players first-time Tigers practiced for two hours in the friendly confines of the LSU Indoor Practice Facility beginning at 12:20 p.m. and again at 7:30.

All of these high school and junior college stars will continue to receive an LSU football baptism by fire over the next three-plus weeks leading up to the season opener on Sept. 1 against Tulane.

However, the ‘newcomers only’ tag will be lifted on Thursday when the varsity squad reports to campus. Before the first full-squad practices on Saturday, the freshmen will take part in academic orientation on Thursday and full-squad orientation on Friday.

Head coach Nick Saban, who met with the media following Monday’s freshman report and Tuesday’s first newcomer practice, will not meet the media again until Friday.

The entire football team will practice 25 times together including a pair of scrimmages and during Sunday’s Fan Day festivities.
