MARACAY, Venezuela — LSU senior All-American Britni Sneed helped lead the USA National team to the gold medal decision, pitching a perfect game and a no-hitter at the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier in Maracay, Venezuela.
The right-handed Sneed hurled a perfect game against Columbia to lead the USA to a 4-0 win in the third game of competition. Sneed struck out 14 batters in the game.
Sneed completed her international competition with a nine-inning marathon victory against Canada in the USA’s final game. The Houston native pitched her second no-hitter against the Canadians and sat down 13 batters in the 1-0 win.
The USA pitching staff dominated at the Pan Am Qualifier, posting a combined ERA of 0.00 in nine games. The pitchers hurled four no-hitters including three perfect games.
Arizona’s Jennie Finch tossed a perfect game against Guatemala in the opening game of the championship. Sneed threw her perfect game versus Colombia and followed that with a no-hitter versus Canada. Notre Dame’s Jennifer Sharron also had a perfect game performance versus Brazil.
The USA went undefeated in the tournament with a record of 9-0 before being awarded the gold medal in a decision by the Pan Am organizing committee. The final two games were called due to rain. Canada was awarded the silver and Cuba the bronze. The USA outscored its opponents 74-0 at the tournament.
