Lee Named SEC Freshman Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Muna Lee was honored by the Southeastern Conference as its 2001 Female Freshman Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, giving the sprint sensation a sweep of the indoor and outdoor awards.

Lee became only the second woman in league history to sweep the short sprints at the SEC Championships as a freshman, blazing to victories in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

The Kansas City, Mo., native came up with a tremendous effort at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, helping the Lady Tigers to a sixth place finish.

Lee was the NCAA-runner-up in the 200-meter dash, finished fourth in the 100-meter dash and anchored the Lady Tigers to the title in the 4×100-meter relay. Her second place finish in the 200-meter dash was the highest ever for a Lady Tiger freshman in the event.

Lee won the SEC Female Freshman Indoor Track Athlete of the Year award earlier this year after winning the SEC Indoor crown in the 200-meter dash, while finishing second in the 60.

Amy Yoder-Begley of Arkansas was named Female Track Athlete of the Year, while Justin Gatlin of Tennessee swept the Male Freshman of the Year and Track Athlete of the Year honors.

Bill Webb of NCAA Outdoor champion Tennessee earned Men’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year, while Lance Harter of Arkansas won Women’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year honors.
