BATON ROUGE — Freddie Kitchens, a graduate assistant with the LSU football program since the spring of 2000, has accepted a full-time position at the University of North Texas where he will coach running backs, LSU head coach Nick Saban announced on Tuesday.
“It’s a great opportunity for Freddie to go from a graduate assistant position to a full-time coaching position,” said Saban. “It’s something he simply can’t pass up. I think Freddie is an outstanding young coach and will be a tremendous addition to the coaching staff at North Texas. I certainly thank him for his contributions to LSU during his time here and wish him the best.”
Kitchens was preparing for his second season with the Tigers and was the offensive graduate assistant for last year’s Peach Bowl champion LSU squad.
LSU was Kitchens’ first venture into coaching at the Division I level. He also served on the coaching staff of Glenville State in 1999. The native of Attalla, Ala., played quarterback for Alabama from 1993-97 and helped the Crimson Tide reach the 1996 SEC Championship Game.
