BATON ROUGE — LSU baseball signee Austin Nagle of Barbe High School in Lake Charles, La., has signed a contract with the Oakland Athletics.

Nagle, an outfielder who led Barbe to the 2001 Class 5A state title, was Oakland’s sixth-round draft choice. He is scheduled to report to the A’s rookie league team in Scottsdale, Ariz. Nagle becomes the second of eight drafted LSU signees to sign with a major league organization.

Outfielder Chamar McDonald of Madison, Miss., signed with the Kansas City Royals earlier this month after being chosen in the fifth round.

The remaining LSU signees selected in the 2001 draft are catcher Jonathan de Vries of Irvine, Calif. (Boston Red Sox, third round); catcher Jonathan Zeringue of E.D. White High School in Thibodaux, La. (Chicago White Sox, third round); outfielder Jay Mattox of Conway, Ark. (Chicago White Sox, fourth round); pitcher Billy Simon of Wellington, Fla. (Boston Red Sox, ninth round); pitcher Chad Gaudin of Crescent City High School in Harahan, La. (Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 34th round); and pitcher Jason Vargas of Apple Valley, Calif. (Minnesota Twins, 43rd round).
