EUGENE, Ore. — Two members of the 2001 LSU track and field team and 10 former members head to venerable Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., this weekend for the GMC Envoy USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Championships will run from Thursday through Sunday with positions on the United States’ squad at the World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada later this summer at stake.
NCAA triple jump champion Walter Davis will try to qualify for the United States squad in both horizontal jumps for the second straight year. Davis finished third in both the triple and long jumps last year at the Olympic Trials, although he only competed in the triple jump at the Sydney Games where he finished 11th.
Davis returns to the site of his NCAA triumph of just over two weeks ago and will compete in the long jump on Friday and the triple jump on Sunday.
In addition to winning the NCAA triple jump title, Davis was also the NCAA runner-up in the long jump.
Myra Combs concluded her LSU career at Hayward Field on June 2, but will take her shot at making her first United States squad this weekend. Combs will compete in the women’s long jump on Thursday, as well as the 200-meter dash, which will begin with trials on Saturday.
Former LSU men’s athletes on hand this weekend include four former NCAA champions, as Rohsaan Griffin and Curtis Perry will compete in the men’s 200-meter dash, as will Russ Buller in the pole vault and LeVar Anderson in the triple jump.
Other former Tigers on hand will be Derrick Brew in the men’s 400-meter dash, Regan Nichols in the 400-meter hurdles and Delyle Woods in the javelin.
Former Lady Tigers in action this weekend include a trio of former NCAA champions, with Joyce Bates and Kim Carson in the 100-meter hurdles and Yolanda Warren in the 400-meter dash.
