NORMAN, Okla. — LSU Senior men’s golfer Alan Morgan was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America Division I Ping All-America Team, it was announced on Monday by the GCAA.
Morgan was named an Honorable Mention selection, marking the first time an LSU golfer was named an All-American since P.J. Smith made the Honorable Mention Team in 1997. Morgan, a Lake Charles native, was also named to the 2001 All-Southeastern Conference First Team, and was named Player of the Year on the LWSA All-Louisiana Team. Morgan was a First Team selection on the 2001 LWSA All-Louisiana squad this season after being named the Louisiana Newcomer of the Year in 2000.
Morgan led LSU this season with seven top-10 finishes, two individual titles, and a stroke average of 71.5. Morgan’s stroke average this season was the second-lowest for a single season in school history, behind only the 71.27 posted by David Toms in 1989. Morgan played in all 13 of LSU’s tournaments this season, playing 39 rounds, 26 of which were par or better.
His low round for the season was a 66 at the Gator Invitational in February. He shot rounds of 67 five times this season, including consecutive 67’s in the final two rounds at the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate in October. Morgan claimed medalist honors there, and at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions in September.
Morgan also finished in the top 10 at the Red River Classic and Gary Koch Intercollegiate in October, and tied for second place at the LSU Spring Invitational in March. Morgan shot an 8-under par 208 at the Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational to place third. He followed that performance with a second place finish at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate in April. In the fall alone, 11 of Morgan’s 15 rounds were par or better.
“Alan had a pretty good year, but I know he is disappointed with the team’s finish at the NCAA’s”, said head coach Greg Jones.
“It is a nice honor for him, I think if we would have advanced farther in the postseason he may have been a second or third team selection, but we all know what a quality player and person he is.
“He had one of the lowest stroke averages in LSU history this season, and is hopefully one of the greatest players to ever play here. This is a tribute to him because he has always worked really hard and done everything necessary to elevate his game.”
Morgan became LSU’s first golfer to be named to the All-SEC team in consecutive seasons since Smith in 1997 and 1998. Morgan finishes his career with 11 top-10 finishes, and 42 rounds of par or better. His career stroke average was a 72.4. Morgan played two seasons at South Alabama under Jones before his transfer to LSU
Morgan will represent the United States in the US-Japan matches July 3-4 in Tochigi, Japan, and will participate in several amateur events this summer in hopes of representing the United States again in the Walker Cup Team later in the year. He will finish school, and improve his overall game in hopes of turning pro, according to Jones.
