STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — LSU’s Bruna Colosio, the eighth-ranked singles player in the nation, lost in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA singles tournament for the second-straight season on Thursday, as the Lady Tigers’ junior fell to Stanford’s No. 9 Lauren Kalvaria, 6-2, 6-0.
“I’m extremely proud of the way that Bruna has played all season long,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “She’s had a great run here at the NCAA’s by making it back to the quarterfinal round, and were looking forward to having her back next season. She was a leader on our team this year and we expect her to be a catalyst for us again in the fall.”
At the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga., Colosio ended the 2001 season with a phenomenal overall record of 26-4. She compiled a 17-2 mark in dual-match competition this season and earned All-America status for her second year. Colosio was also named the 2001 Southeastern Conference player of the year as she finished with a perfect 10-0 record in No. 1 singles play.
Colosio became the first Lady Tiger in school history to advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA singles tournament in two straight seasons.
Last year, Colosio was ousted by UNLV’s Katrina Mulec, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the quarterfinal round, and in 1994 former LSU great, Suzanna Rodrigues became the first Lady Tiger to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Kalvaria, Stanford’s junior from Indialantic, Fla., improved her overall record on the season to 38-3 and will face fourth-ranked Bea Bielik of Wake Forest on Friday at 9 a.m. (Central time).
