STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Junior Bruna Colosio continued to represent LSU well at the NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday as she won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the national championship tournament.
Colosio, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, began the day by making quick work of Texas’ Vladka Uhlirova, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round. In the afternoon, Colosio ousted Kathy Sell of Duke, 6-4, 6-4, to seal her place in the quarterfinals. Sell had knocked off third-seeded Whitney Laiho of Florida, 6-4, 7-6, in the morning.
“Bruna is playing exceptionally well right now. She played better in the second match today than she did in the first,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “If she can keep this up she’ll have a shot at winning this thing. She has a tough match tomorrow.”
Her opponent on Thursday will be eighth-seeded Lauren Calvaria of Stanford, who beat South Alabama’s Martina Ondrejkova, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the round of eight.
She will face ninth-ranked Lauren Kalvaria of national champion Stanford on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Kalvaria (junior, Indialantic, Fla.), Stanford’s No. 2 singles player posted a 4-0 singles record to guide the Cardinal to the NCAA Team Championship on Monday. She has a 37-2 overall record in the 2001 season, including the clinching match against Vanderbilt in the championship.
Colosio, who has been playing all season with tendinitis in her shoulder, is one of only two LSU players to ever advance to the quarterfinals. Suzana Rodrigues accomplished the feat in 1994 while Colosio has now done so in consecutive years. Last season, she fell to Katrina Mulec of UNLV in the quarterfinals in a tough three-set match.
“It’s is really amazing what she’s been able to accomplish because she’s basically played hurt for the last month,” said Minnis.
With her appearance in the round of 16, Colosio also sewed up yet another singles All-America accolade, making her the first three-time all-American in Lady Tiger history. She was a Singles and a Doubles all-American last year.
The Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 seeds remain in the tournament, with Colosio (a 9-16 seed) and unseeded Kristy Dascoli of Ohio State as Cinderella stories.
