LAKE CHARLES, La. — The LSU men’s golf team completed a near sweep of the individual awards on the 2001 All-Louisiana Golf Team, announced Sunday by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The Tigers had two players on the first team, two on the second, and took home three of the four individual honors. Senior Alan Morgan was named to the men’s first team, and honored as the Golfer of the Year in the state. Morgan had the lowest stroke average in the state, at 71.3. He was the Newcomer of the Year last season, his first at LSU.
Junior Nathan Goulding, a native of Cohuna, Australia, was named the Newcomer of the Year, and joined Morgan on the first team.
Goulding is in his first season at LSU after playing last year at Midland Junior College in Midland, Texas. He posted 11 rounds of par or better, a 72.4 stroke average, and had two top-10 finishes this season.
Senior Craig Taylor and Sophomore John Humphries were named to the second team. Humphries was named to the All-SEC Second Team last month. Humphries was also a member of the 2001 SEC Academic Honor Roll. Taylor played in 11 of 12 tournaments this season, with two top-10 finishes and a stroke average of 73.6.
Second-year head coach Greg Jones was named men’s Coach of the Year. Jones led LSU to three tournament victories and a national ranking of 14th in the 2000-01 season. The three tournament wins were the most for an LSU team since the 1995-96 season. Jones served as South Alabama’s head coach for six seasons before coming ro Baton Rouge.
LSU finished in a 19th place tie at the NCAA East Regional this past weekend. It was LSU’s first postseason appearance since 1998.
