BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU track and field star Myra Combs and men’s swimming captain Will Tanner represented LSU on the 2001 Southeastern Conference Good Works Team, the league office announced on Thursday.
The SEC sponsors Good Works Teams for football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s sports and women’s sports at-large. The at-large Good Works Team represents 17 SEC sponsored sports. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. The third annual men’s and women’s at-large Good Works Team follows:
Will Tanner, LSU, Swimming & Diving
Besides being a four year letterwinner, All-American, Team Captain and three-time SEC Honor Roll member, Tanner volunteered his services for both the the Christmas Toy Drive for homeless children and the Thanksgiving Food Drive. In addition, he also worked at the LSU Halloween Boozar. Tanner took a mission trip to Colorado to built homes for the poor through Habitat for Humanity. Tanner also took mission trips to New Mexico and San Marcos.
Myra Combs, LSU, Track & Field
Combs, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., was a team leader for the Christmas Toy Drive for homeless children, volunteered with the Children’s Thanksgiving Food Drive, and assisted with the LSU Halloween Boozar as well. Combs often would read to children at local elementary schools, visit sick children at Our Lady of Lake Pediatrics and visit residents at Flannery Oaks Nursing Home. Combs, an 11-time All-American, four year letterman and two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, also coaches a youth track team.
