BATON ROUGE — Second-seeded LSU faces No. 7 seed Florida at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the SEC Tournament at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.
All SEC Tournament games will be aired live on cable channel 11 in Baton Rouge and its surrounding area. Fans elsewhere should call their local cable stations for broadcast information.
LSU, ranked No. 9 in this week’s ESPN/Baseball Weekly poll, completed the regular season with a 37-18-1 overall mark, 18-12 in the SEC. The Tigers captured their fifth SEC Western Division title in the last six years, and LSU placed second in the overall league race behind first-place Georgia.
Florida, which finished fourth in the SEC Eastern Division, completed the regular season with a 33-23 overall mark, 16-14 in league play.
The winner of the LSU-Florida game will play at 5 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Wednesday’s 10 a.m. match-up between third-seeded Tennessee and sixth-seeded Ole Miss.
The losers of those two first-round games will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday in an elimination contest.
Senior right-hander Jason Scobie (3-1, 4.75 ERA) is LSU’s scheduled starting pitcher on Wednesday, while Florida is expected to counter with senior right-hander Keith Brice (2-5, 6.79 ERA).
LSU swept a three-game regular-season series from the Gators March 16-18 in Baton Rouge by scores of 18-10, 4-3 and 10-7. The Tigers lead the all-times series with Florida, 40-23.
LSU will play host next week to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional May 25-27 in Alex Box Stadium. LSU, which is serving as a regional host for the 12th straight season, was one of 16 regional sites announced Monday by the NCAA.
The winners of the 16 four-team regionals will be paired in eight NCAA Super Regionals (June 1-3) at campus sites, and the super regional winners will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. (June 8-16).
The entire 64-team NCAA Tournament field and pairings will be announced at 2 p.m. Monday during a live ESPN telecast.
