Women’s Golf Remains in Seventh at NCAA Regional

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The 10th-ranked LSU women’s golf team remained in seventh place after the second round of the NCAA Central Regional Golf Tournament on Friday, but opened up a nice cushion to the final qualifying spot with one round to go.

The Tigers posted a second consecutive 305 (17-over) on Friday to stand at 34-over 610. The Tigers are in seventh and the eighth and final qualifying spot is 10 strokes back at 44-over 620. LSU must finish in the top eight to advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., May 22-25.

Tulsa moved from fourth to first with a 3-over 291 second round to stand at 15-over 591 at the Birch Boilermaker Golf Complex on the Purdue campus. Purdue is second at 19-over 595, followed by Oklahoma State at 599, New Mexico State 602, with Texas and Kent St. tied for fifth in front of LSU at 608.

“We didn’t move up, but we were able to put a little distance between up and those in eighth place,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “Ten shots is not automatic to keep us in position, but if we go out and grind through the conditions and focus on the entire round, then we will be okay and we will be advancing to the Championships for another year.”

For the second consecutive day, LSU counted four scores in the 70s, topped by the 1-over 73 of Gretna junior Lindy Hitdlebaugh. Hitdlebaugh stands at 7-over (78-73) 151 after 36 holes, good enough for a tie for 13th. Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan followed her first day 75 with a 77 and stands at 8-over 152, in a group tied for 18th.

Senior Katy Harris posted a second consecutive 5-over 77 and is in a group at 32nd place with a 10-over 154, while Isabel Dornellas, the freshman from Rio de Janeiro, posted the final counting score of the day with a 6-over 78.

The individual leader remains Stacy Prammanasudh of Tulsa who followed Thursday’s 2-under 70 with an even par 72 to stand at 2-under 142, one shot ahead of Heather Zielinski of Purdue (72-71).

The tournament concludes with a final 18-role round on Saturday with the leaders expected to tee off in the morning wave.
