BATON ROUGE — Five members of the fourth-ranked LSU softball team were named to the 69 member 2001 Southeastern Conference Softball Academic Honor Roll Tuesday by SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer.
The five players honored were Stephanie Hastings, April Janzen, Britni Sneed, Julie Wiese and Auburne Ziober.
“I would like to say congratulations to these student-athletes,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “These girls really understand the priority and definition of the term ‘student-athlete’. Juggling academics and athletics is not an easy task, and these young ladies prove their excellence in handling both.”
Ziober, a senior in mass communication/advertising, is a three-time honoree. Hastings, Janzen and Sneed are all two-time selections. Hastings is a senior majoring in kinesiology, and Janzen is a junior majoring in elementary education. Sneed is also a junior studying kinesiology. This marks the first time Wiese has received this honor. She is a sophomore academically and has not declared a major.
The Tigers have had 28 members selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in its first five years as a league program.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career; 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification; and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2001 SEC Softball Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 1999-2000 academic calendar.
LSU will play Auburn Thursday night in the opening round of the 2001 SEC Softball Tournament at 7 p.m. at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.
