BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Senior Alan Morgan, and sophomore John Humphries were named to the 2001 All-Southeastern Conference team, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Morgan was named to the First team, and Humphries the Second Team. Morgan is the Tigers first member of the All-SEC First Team since P.J. Smith in 1997. Morgan was named to the All-SEC Second team in 2000. Humphries, an Alexandria native, joins Morgan on the 2001 team as a Second Team selection, marking the first time since 1994 that two LSU golfers made the team.
Morgan, an All-America candidate, finished the 2000-01 season with two individual titles, seven top-10 finishes, and a stroke average of 71.3. His stroke average is the second-lowest in school history for a season, behind only the 71.27 posted by David Toms in 1989. Morgan, a Lake Charles native, had 25 rounds of par or better, and shot a low round of 66 this season. He only had 11 rounds over par all season.
Morgan was one of eight golfers named to the First Team. Georgia, the country’s top-ranked team, placed three players on the First Team, followed by Florida, who had two. Georgia had five players total on the 2001 team, the most of any school. Georgia senior Nick Cassini was named 2001 SEC Player of the Year. Auburn’s Mike Griffin was named Coach of the Year, while Florida’s Camilo Villegas was named Freshman of the Year. Griffin, in his 17th season, won the honor for the third time.
Morgan won SEC Player of the Week honors for the week of April 9-13. It was the first such award for Morgan in his LSU career. Morgan only placed out of the top 20 twice during the season. This marks the 20th consecutive season that LSU has placed at least one golfer on the All-SEC squad. The Tigers will find out Tuesday by teleconference what NCAA regional they will particpate in. The NCAA regionals begin May 17.
