BATON ROUGE — Northwestern State pitcher Zach Sanches and LSU softball hurler Britni Sneed have been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week in their respective sports for their individual performances during the past week.
Sneed, a junior from Houston, earned her fourth LSWA Softball Player of the Week award this season in a vote by softball sports information directors from across the state after picking up two wins and establishing a new LSU single-season strikeout record in the process. She allowed two hits and fanned 29 batters in 14 innings of work and notched her school-record 279th strikeout in a 6-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday.
Sanches, a junior from Kingwood, Texas, was named the LSWA Baseball Player of the Week in a vote of media members from across the state after he went 2-0 in two relief appearances in a crucial Southland Conference series at Louisiana-Monroe. Sanches tossed nine innings and allowed seven hits, one earned run and struck out two as Northwestern State increased its SLC lead to two games over ULM with three games left to play.
She came back to toss her second complete-game no-hitter of the season — and fourth of her career — against SEC opponent Ole Miss and set a new LSU single-season record with 28 wins on the mound. Her 14 shutouts in 2001 is a LSU single-season record and she is a perfect 17-0 against SEC opponents.
