BATON ROUGE — Seniors Robert Royal and Rohan Davey along with junior Trev Faulk have been named captains for the 2001 LSU football team, head coach Nick Saban announced on Thursday.
Davey and Faulk were named captains for the second straight year, while Royal was honored for the first time. Davey becomes the first offensive player to serve as team captain in back-to-back seasons since 1988-89 when Tommy Hodson was a team captain, while Faulk is the first on defense for the Tigers since Marc Boutte was captain in 1989-90.
“I think when you have identifiable leadership on your team, I think it’s good to let the team pick it (the captains),” Saban said. “The players chose Rohan Davey, Trev Faulk and Robert Royal as team captains for the 2001 season. I’m very happy to have these players selected because they all have very positive leadership qualities.”
Saban said that LSU will also have an honorary team captain for each game next year in order to let the other seniors take on a leadership role as well.
Last year, Royal was a first team all-Southeastern Conference selection as a tight end for the Tigers, while Faulk earned second team honors at linebacker. Davey, who came off the bench in the second half to spark the Tigers to a 28-14 win over Georgia Tech in the Peach Bowl, was named Offensive MVP of the bowl game.
