BATON ROUGE — LSU All-American sprinter Muna Lee was selected the SEC’s women’s track and field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday following a tremendous weekend at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.
Lee swept both the 100 and 200-meter titles, while anchoring the sixth-ranked Lady Tigers to victory in the 4×100-meter relay. Lee posted a national-leading time of 11.13 in the 100-meter dash to win the title, while picking up the 200-meter title in a blazing time of 22.74, the second fastest time in the nation in 2001.
While both times were wind-aided marks and do not count as official records in the Lady Tiger record books, they are still the fastest times ever run by an LSU freshman in either event. Lee became only the second LSU freshman to ever run a sub-23 second time in the 200-meter dash.
Lee also rallied to the Lady Tigers to a dramatic victory in the 4×100-meter relay, as the freshman inherited a seven-meter deficit but still ran down Texas anchor Moushaumi Robinson to post the win for the nation’s top-ranked short relay.
The Kansas City native and her Lady Tiger teammates take their top-ranked 4×100-meter relay team on the road this weekend at the 106th running of the Penn Relays at venerable Franklin Field in Philadelphia from Thursday through Saturday.
