BATON ROUGE — LSU Tiger softball juniors Britni Sneed and Trena Peel were two of 51 of the nation’s finest softball players selected Tuesday to participate in the USA Softball Women’s National Team Camp, May 30 to June 3 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
“This is an incredible honor for these young ladies,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “This is also a huge honor for LSU softball.”
Sneed and Peel were each members of the 1999 Summer USA Junior Olympic team that played in Taiwan. Sneed was the runner-up Olympic female athlete of the month for her performance, as she did not allow a single hit or run.
USA Softball will select two 16-player teams to represent the U.S. in international competitions such as the U.S. Cup in Honolulu, the Canada Cup in Vancouver and the Pan Am Qualifier in Maracay, Venezuela during the 2001 season.
The players invited are a who’s who of women’s fast pitch softball, including NCAA Champions, World Champions and a total of 54 NCAA All-America selections. A total of 10 states from Alabama to California and 15 NCAA Division I colleges will be represented at the 2001 USA Softball Women’s National Team Camp. Additional players could be added if any of these players are unable to attend the camp.
Selections for the 2001 USA Softball Women’s National Teams will be made following the USA Softball Women’s National Team Camp. The two teams will then participate in the USA Softball Shootout, a four-city West Coast tour that will stop in Portland (June 8), Spokane (June 10), Sacramento (June 14) and Los Angeles (June 17) prior to leaving for the U.S. Cup in Hawaii.
USA Softball Women’s National Teams have been among the most dominating of any sports team in history. The USA’s ability to bring home the gold in World Championships, the Pan American Games and the Olympics is unchallenged, with a total of thirteen.
The USA Softball Women’s National Team won the first Olympic gold medal in the sport’s history during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA, and defended its gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. The USA Softball Women’s National Team, which has won the past four consecutive World Championships, the past four consecutive Pan Am Games and the past two Olympic gold medals, is the undisputed No. 1 team in the world.
