Tigers Break Course Record; Hold Second Place at TOC

Men’s Golf Eighth at Billy Hitchcock Through One Round

OPELIKA, Ala.– The 20th ranked LSU men’s golf team shot a first round score of 8-over par 296 to finish the day in eighth place at the 2001 Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate Friday. The Tigers are 14 strokes behind leader Georgia State, who is 6-under par.

The host and defending champion Auburn is tied for second place with Alabama-Birmingham at 3-under par. South Carolina and Ole Miss round out the top five. The tournament field is comprised of 12 teams, including six from the Southeastern Conference.

The tournament is being held at the Saugahatchee Country Club. It is a par-72 course, and its yardage is 6,689. The tournament runs through Sunday. Tee times for Saturday and Sunday are 8 a.m.

Senior All-America candidate Alan Morgan is tied for seventh after one round. The Lake Charles native shot a first round 71. He is tied with five other golfers at 1-under par. He is four shots behind individual leader Payton Osborn of UAB. Morgan is looking for his seventh top-10 finish of the season, and third individual title as well. Morgan finished third at the Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational last weekend in Augusta, Ga.

Craig Taylor posted a first round 74, and is tied for 31st place. Nathan Goulding shot a 75 and is in 40th place. John Humphries and Garrett Prather both shot 76’s, and are tied for 48th place.

The Tigers are hoping to win their fourth tournament title of the season.

Their last victory came at the LSU Spring Invitational March 6 in Baton Rouge at the University Club. The Tigers will head to the SEC Championships April 19-22 following the Billy Hitchcock.
