Nieto Third in Texas Relay’s Hammer Throw

AUSTIN, Texas — Javier Nieto finished third in the men’s hammer throw, on a light day of action for the LSU track and field team at the 74th annual Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

The two-time NCAA qualifier came up with a throw of 205 feet 1 inch on his second attempt and headed to the final in second place, but was unable to improve upon his standing. The throw by Nieto was an NCAA provisional qualifier, but did not reach his season-best mark of 207-2.

On the track, the LSU men 4×800-meter relay team of Jeffrey Fisher, Tomario Thomas, Billy Bohlke and Brent Martin finished 10th with a time of 7 minutes 40.62 seconds. Baylor won the event in a time of 7:25.40.

Bridget Cusack was in the middle of the leader pack in the women’s 10,000-meter run and sat in third place with just under three laps to go. But after 34-plus minutes of running, Cusack fell victim to dehydration and was unable to complete the race.

The Lady Tigers had two competitors in the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday. Neither was able to advance to Saturday’s final, however. Zamyal Jackson ran a time of 1:02.48 to finish third in her heat, while Althea Thomas finished fifth in her heat with a time of 1:03.23.

Both the men’s and women’s squads will have full slates on Friday with a majority of the preliminary rounds in the relays and sprints, as well as many field event finals. The Texas Relays run through Saturday afternoon.
