Wiese Named Louisiana Softball Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU third baseman Julie Wiese and Southeastern Louisiana University pitcher Chris O’Brien earned Player of the Week honors by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for their performances during the past week.

Wiese, a freshman from Baton Rouge, earned LSWA Softball Player-of-the-Week honors by a vote of softball sports information directors from across the state after she led the nationally-ranked Tigers to five wins on the week going 8-for-12 (.667) at the plate with four home runs and 12 RBI.

She hit her first career grand slam in a win over Coastal Carolina and became the fifth Tiger to hit two home runs in a game when she hit consecutive blasts against Georgia on Friday.

She currently leads the Tigers with an LSU freshman-record nine home runs and is batting .330 with 26 RBI on the season.

O’Brien, a junior southpaw from Baton Rouge, was named LSWA Baseball Player-of-the-Week by a panel of voters from across the state after he recorded his team-high third complete game of the season for the Lions.

O’Brien scattered five hits and struck out three in a 6-1 win at Southland Conference leader Texas-Arlington in the first-game of a three-game series on Sunday. O’Brien, who allowed one run and walked two as he helped Southeastern snap a three-game losing streak and four-game slide in SLC play, retired 11 batters in a row at one point in the game as he lowered his earned run average in SLC play to 2.73.
