Ferdinand Named Kodak All-American

BATON ROUGE — Senior Marie Ferdinand was tabbed a Kodak All-American, LSU’s first in a decade, it was announced Wednesday.

Current Associate Head Coach Dana “Pokey” Chatman was the last Lady Tiger to garner the honor as she did so in the 1991 campaign.

This award is the latest for Ferdinand, who had one of the best seasons ever for an LSU player. She has already been named a Second-Team All-American by the Associated Press, First-Team All-SEC by the coaches (unanimous) and the AP and one of three finalists for ESPN the Magazine’s Shooting Guard of the Year.

Ferdinand led the Lady Tigers to a 20-11 record and a second-round showing in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Purdue. In that game, she set a new LSU tournament scoring record with 34 points.

For the year, Ferdinand averaged 21.1 points, 3.6 assists and 2.6 steals, all tops on the team. She also added 5.1 rebounds and shot 51.2 percent from the field.

She scored in double figures in all 31 games for the season, becoming just the second LSU player ever to accomplish that feat as Kodak All-American Joyce Walker did so in 1983 and 1984

Also named to the Kodak Women’s Basketball All-America first team were Svetlana Abrosimova from Connecticut; Tamika Catchings from Tennessee; Stacey Dales from Oklahoma; Katie Douglas from Purdue; Kelly Miller from Georgia; Ruth Riley from Notre Dame; Georgia Schweitzer from Duke; Jackie Stiles from Southwest Missouri State; and LaToya Thomas from Mississippi State.

The Kodak All-American team is selected by members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
