Colosio Beats NAIA No. 1 Player, Wins Georgia Invitational

Women’s Tennis Falls to Tennessee, 6-1

BATON ROUGE — The 25th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team was overpowered by the 15th-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Sunday by a score of 6-1 in the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.

“We were totally outplayed in every facet of today’s match,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We didn’t play close to our potential and Tennessee came in here with something to prove. It was a tough loss, but we just haveto focus on our upcoming match with Georgia on Tuesday.”

With the loss, the Lady Tigers dropped to an overall record of 10-4 on the season and a 2-3 mark against Southeastern Conference opponents. Tennesseeimproved to a 13-1 overall record in dual matches and remained undefeated in SEC play with a perfect 4-0 record.

LSU’s Bruna Colosio proved to be the lone bright spot for the Lady Tigers in Sunday’s match. In doubles play, Colosio teamed up with freshman Rocio Fantilli to defeat the Lady Volunteers’ combination of Kim Gates and Vilmarie Castellvi on court No. 1, 8-5. The Lady Tigers’ 20th-ranked tandem improved to a 10-1 dual record with the win.

Colosio, the nation’s 43rd-ranked singles player, extended her winningstreak to six matches in a row on Sunday as she smothered Tennessee’s 83rd-ranked Alison Ojeda, 6-2, 6-3, on court No. 1 to pick up LSU’s only point. Colosio improved to an overall record of 16-2 with the win and recorded her sixth victory of the season over a ranked opponent.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the 25th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team, as the Lady Tigers head to Athens, Ga., for an SEC contest against the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
