COLUMBIA, S.C. — Meredith Duncan of LSU remained on top after Saturday’s second round of the Lady Gamecock Classic, but she was joined at the top by teammate Katy Harris entering Sunday’s final round in a battle for the title.
Both players are looking for their first career collegiate titles. Duncan is a junior from Shreveport, while Harris is a senior from South Bend, Ind.
Duncan followed up Friday’s even-par round with a 1-over 73 to stand at 1-over 145. Harris, one shot back after the opening round, came with an even par 72 on Saturday to join Duncan in a tie for the lead entering the final 18 holes at 1-over 145.
The LSU pair is one shot ahead of four golfers at 2-over 146. Kristy McPherson of South Carolina, Summer Sirmons and Angela Jerman of Georgia and Jennifer Perri of Furman. Perri and Jerman had shared the lead with Duncan after one round.
LSU improved its team score by one stroke to 12-over 300, again having to count an 80-score in the team total. The Tigers, however, are very entrenched in third place at 25-over 601, 19 shots ahead of fourth place Wake Forest and South Carolina. Georgia remains the leader 12 shots up on LSU at 589 with Duke two shots back at 15-over par 591.
Lesley McClurg, the LSU senior from Redmond, Wash., continues to have a good showing for LSU with back-to-back 3-over 75s for a two-day total of 6-over 150, good enough for a tie for 13th place. LSU’s final counting score was an 80 by Brazil freshman Isabelle Dornellas.
“Katy and Meredith really have it going and it is going to be exciting to watch them play on Sunday,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “I certainly hope both of them have a great round and it is decided between the two of them. We need to still get four scores put together at the same time, but I like some of the things we are doing and are position here is very, very good.”
The final 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday morning at the University Club of South Carolina.
