BATON ROUGE — The eighth ranked LSU Tigers shutout the Lady Demons of Northwestern State, 1-0, for their 11th shutout of the season on Wednesday night in Tiger Park.
“Britni was awesome once again tonight,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “We won the game on pure speed. Jennie Reeves had a great sacrifice bunt that really helped and Dee beat out the hit to second base that allowed us to ride Britni’s arm to win the game.”
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when LSU designated hitter Erin Johnson was hit by a pitch from Lady Demon pitcher Amanda Ortego. Pinch runner Auburne Ziober then advanced to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Jennie Reeves and third on a fly ball. Dee Douglas beat out a hit to second base to send home Ziober for the only Tiger run.
The Demons threatened in the top of the sixth when Anne Johnston singled to right field. Jada Garcia then reached base on an error by second baseman Jill Crawford during a sacrifice bunt attempt to place runners on first and second. But the Tigers turned a double play to get Johnston out at the plate.
Tiger pitcher Britni Sneed picked up the win to improve to 10-4 on the season. Sneed matched her LSU single game strikeout record with 15 strikeouts against the Demons. She only allowed two hits and had no walks.
The Tiger bats had five hits off Ortego, who struck out seven and walked none. Dee Douglas was two-for-two at the plate, with an RBI. Reeves hit her second double of the season.
The LSU Tigers travel to Gainesville to face the Florida Gators in their Southeastern Conference opener. The two teams will play in a double header on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon. The Tigers return home on Wednesday, March 14 to play host to Louisiana Tech.
