BATON ROUGE — The eighth-ranked LSU Tiger softball team plays host to the Northwestern State Demons at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
“We are looking forward to the game on Wednesday and continuing our success,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “This will be a good way to help us prepare for our Southeastern Confernence opener with Florida this weekend. The girls have been working hard and it showed in our last few games.”
Wednesday night’s game with the Demons will be televised locally on the Pelican Sports Network, Cox Cable Channel 18, on Thursday, March 8 at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
LSU leads the all-time series with Northwestern State, having won all 11 contests in the past four years. In 2000, LSU swept a double header with the Demons, shutting them out, 5-0 and 8-0, before beating them 7-1 at the NCAA Regional at the end of the season.
The Tigers enter the game on a four-game winning streak with a record of 17-4 following the soggy Purple and Gold Challenge at Tiger Park this past weekend. Christy Connor leads the team with a batting average of .354 followed closely by Julie Wiese at .353. Wiese, a freshman, leads the team with five home runs for the season.
The Tiger pitchers have struck out a total of 193 batters with junior Britni Sneed leading with 110 K’s for the season. Senior pitcher Ashley Lewis leads the staff with an earned-run average of 0.77. LSU has outscored its
opponents 133-34 this season.
The Demons come to LSU holding a record of 9-4 for the season. Northwestern State won its last game against Southland Conference opponent Southwest Texas, 2-1, after dropping two games to them, 2-0 and 3-0.
Following the game with the Demons, LSU heads to Gainesville to open SEC play with a doubleheader against Florida, beginning Saturday at 2 p.m.
