BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Marie Ferdinand and Angelia Crockett have been named All-Americans by the Women’s Basketball Journal, it was announced Tuesday.
It is the second consecutive year that Ferdinand, who was named to the second team, has earned the honor from WBJ. She was tabbed as a third-team all-American last year.
Crockett was named to the Defensive All-America first team, a first for her. She is the second Lady Tiger to ever earn the honor as Latasha Dorsey garnered the award two season’s ago.
Notre Dame’s Ruth Riley has been named the 2000-01 national player of the year. In addition, the 6-6 senior center was also tabbed as WBJ’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Riley, who was the Big East Conference Player of the Year, was joined on the first team All-America unit by three other conference players of the year.
Purdue’s Katie Douglas earned the honor in the Big Ten, Stacey Dales of Oklahoma was the top player in the Big 12, and Georgia’s Kelly Miller received the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year award. The first team was completed by Mississippi State forward LaToya Thomas.
WBJ also named Oklahoma’s Sherri Coale as the National Coach of the Year, and Duke’s Alana Beard was tabbed as the National Freshman of the Year.
