BATON ROUGE — The LSU baseball team, ranked No. 2 this week in all three college baseball polls, plays host to Southern University at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.
The game can be heard on the LSU Sports Network (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge) and on the Internet at www.LSUsports.net. The contest will also be televised by College Sports Southeast (Cable Channel 18 in Baton Rouge).
LSU junior first baseman Bryan Moore, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was named Monday as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week. Moore, a transfer from Indian River (Fla.) Community College, enjoyed an exceptional week at the plate, hitting .563 (9-for-16) in LSU’s four games with three doubles, three homers, six runs and 11 RBI.
In the Tigers’ series victory at Arizona State last weekend, Moore hit .615 (8-for-13) in the three games with three doubles, two homers, five runs and nine RBI. In LSU’s Game 2 victory over the Sun Devils, Moore was 5-for-5 with two homers, three doubles and seven RBI. The totals of five hits and three doubles each tied LSU single-game records.
On the year, Moore is batting a team-high .468 (22-for-47) with six doubles, four homers and 18 RBI.
LSU (12-2-1) enters Tuesday’s game with Southern riding an 11-game non-losing streak. The Tigers’ 10-game win streak ended Sunday at Arizona State, when the teams played to a 5-5 tie.
The game was halted after eight innings due to a time limit instituted to accommodate LSU’s flight plans from the Phoenix airport.
The Tigers haven’t lost since a 7-6, 11-inning setback on Feb. 14 to Louisiana-Monroe.
Southern held a 5-2 record entering a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday in Houston versus Texas Southern.
Freshman right-hander Brian Wilson, a native of Londonderry, N.H., is scheduled to make his first career LSU start Tuesday night. Wilson, who has made four relief appearances this season, has no decisions and a 15.43 ERA. He has pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Southern head coach Roger Cador is expected to name the Jaguars’ starting pitcher on Tuesday.
LSU holds a 35-0 advantage in the Southern series, which began in 1970. Thirty-four of the 35 wins have come during head coach Skip Bertman‘s 18-year tenure.
LSU, which is batting .371 as a team batted .403 (62-for-154) in its four games last week with 13 doubles, 11 homers and 48 runs. The Tigers hit .372 (42-for-113) in the Arizona State series with eight homers, eight doubles and 32 runs.
LSU has reached double figures in hits in nine consecutive games, and the Tigers have scored in double figures in six of their last seven contests.
