BATON ROUGE — Two Tiger pitchers used a pair of one-hit shutouts to lead the eighth-ranked LSU softball team to a pair of 5-0 wins over No. 21 Southern Mississippi and Tulsa.
“It was a good day for us with two wins,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “We are a little disappointed in our hitting. We can do a better job. Great pitching, good defense and timely hitting is what builds a champion. Ashley and Britni both had fantastic games and did extremely well.”
Junior Britni Sneed set an LSU record for strikeouts in a single game with 15 against Tulsa on Sunday evening.
Senior Ashley Lewis pitched a one-hit shutout of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in game one. Lewis picked up her seventh win of season while striking out nine Eagle batters.
LSU scored first with two runs on no hits in the bottom of the second. Southern Miss pitcher Felicia Gonzales walked catcher Jennifer Schuelke with the bases loaded to send home Christy Connor. Trena Peel immediately stole home to put LSU up 2-0.
The Tigers added three runs in the fourth inning. Dee Douglas got the first Tiger hit of the game with a two run double to right center that scored Erin Johnson and Julie Wiese. Sara Fitzgerald followed with a single that scored Douglas.
In game two, LSU started scoring in the top of the first when Connor singled in Stephanie Hastings from second. The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the third when Hastings singled in Aleshia Perry. Peel doubled off the center field wall to send home Hastings and put LSU up 3-0.
Wiese homered off the scoreboard to leadoff the top of the fourth inning. Perry then singled up the middle with the bases loaded to send Johnson across the plate.
Sneed improved to 8-4 on the season, with only one hit and 15 strikeouts. The Tiger bats had 10 hits off Tulsa pitchers Amy VanHuss and Jenny Magill. Peel went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Wiese hit her fifth homer of the season.
LSU will play a single game against Tulsa on Monday at 3 p.m. before facing Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m.
