Men’s Tennis Set to Host Southern Miss

BATON ROUGE — The 19th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team is prepared for a non-conference battle on Thursday as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles invade the W.T “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium for dual match beginning at 2 p.m.

The Tigers head into Thurday’s contest with a 5-2 overall record and an 0-1 mark in Southeastern Conference play. LSU looks to improve upon its current 5-1 non-conference record with a victory against Southern Miss.

The LSU men’s tennis team has recorded non-conference wins this season over Southern (7-0), Centenary (7-0), UL-Lafayette (7-0), UL-Monroe (7-0), and Southeastern (7-0). LSU’s lone non-conference loss of the 2000-01 dual-match season came on the road against Texas A&M. The Tigers fell a tiebreaker short to the current fifth-ranked Aggies, 4-3, in College Station.

The Golden Eagles enter Thursday’s match with an overall record of 1-4 after dropping their first four-dual contests of the season. Southern Miss started off the spring competition with losses to No. 17 Mississippi State (5-2), Alabama (5-2), Miami (6-1), and then No. 16 South Alabama (7-0). In their most recent match, the Golden Eagles pounded UL-Monroe by the score of 6-1 to notch the team’s first victory of the season.

LSU was unsuccessful in its previous-dual match against Mississippi State. On the road in Starkville, Miss., the Tigers fell short in singles play and dropped their Southeastern Conference opener, 5-2, at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

Last season, the Tigers defeated Southern Miss by a count of 5-2 and LSU boasts a 16-0 overall record versus the Golden Eagles.

LSU’s 19th-ranked men’s tennis team will host the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
