BATON ROUGE — The eighth-ranked LSU softball team travels to Lake Charles on Wednesday for an afternoon double header with the McNeese State Lady Colonels beginning at 2 p.m.
“We have a challenge to continue a great start,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “We realize this is a huge game for McNeese with LSU coming to town. We wear a bulls-eye on our chest every time we play a state school. We have to be ready for the competition.”
LSU is 5-1 following the weekend at the Fiesta Bowl Classic hosted by Arizona State. During the weekend, the Tigers knocked off No. 4 Washington and No. 6 Arizona State, as well as UNLV, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.
The Tigers and the Colonels have met seven times in the past, with LSU holding a 7-0 record against McNeese State. In their last meetings, the Tigers posted two shutout victories over the Colonels, 3-0 and 5-0, to start the 2000 season at the Tiger Classic tournament hosted by LSU.
This will be the first time that LSU has traveled to Lake Charles to take on McNeese State. The previous seven meetings between the team have been in Baton Rouge at Tiger Park.
LSU is led by Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week Britni Sneed, who leads the team with an ERA of 1.93 and 26 strikeouts. The Tiger bats are hitting .302 as a team with five home runs, led by freshman Julie Wiese with two.
The LSU softball team will play its home opener on Monday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 against East Tennessee State in Tiger Park.
