Track & Field’s Davis Named SEC Men’s Athlete of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU junior Walter Davis has been named Southeastern Conference Men’s Track and Feld Athlete of the Week after winning both the long and triple jumps at the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas this past weekend.

Davis broke his own school record in the triple jump on Friday evening, winning the event with a mark of 55 feet 11 1/2 inches, the third best jump posted in the world in 2001. The 2000 Olympian then returned the following day and won the long jump with a mark of 25-9 1/2, his second best jump of the season.

Davis becomes the second member of the LSU track and field program to win Athlete of the Week honors this season, joining Muna Lee, who won Women’s Athlete of the Week honors a week ago.

Demetria Washington of South Carolina won the women’s honor this week after winning the 400-meter dash at the Tyson Invitational while also helping South Carolina to a victory in the mile relay. Washington also finished third in the 200-meter dash behind double sprint-winner Lee.

The LSU track and field team returns to action on Friday evening with the LSU Twilight, the final tune-up before the SEC Indoor Championships the following weekend. Field events begin at 3 p.m., while track events start at 6 p.m.
