BATON ROUGE — The 21st-ranked LSU women’s tennis team will attempt to bounce back from its first loss of the season on Tuesday, as the Lady Tigers host the Florida State Lady Seminoles at 2 p.m. in the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium. LSU fell to Texas A&M, 5-2, on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
“It’s going to be another tough match for us,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “They (Florida State) finished last season as the 22nd-ranked team in the nation and they are returning everybody from that team. It should be a good match for us, and hopefully we’ll be able to get back on the winning track.”
The LSU women’s tennis team enters the contest with a 4-1 overall dual-match record. The Lady Tigers have recorded wins over Centenary (7-0), West Florida (7-0), Southern (6-0), and UL-Monroe (6-1). LSU’s lone defeat came on the road against Texas A&M.
Florida State opened the 2001 dual-match season with two-straight victories against both Georgia Southern and Bethune-Cookman College. The Lady Seminoles then dropped their next two contests to place them at 2-2 going into Tuesday’s battle with the Lady Tigers. Florida State was upset by Alabama, 4-3, and then hammered by fourth-ranked Florida, 7-0, in its most recent match.
The Lady Tigers will be led by 42nd-ranked Bruna Colosio. Colosio, who moved up two spots in the ITA tennis rankings on Monday, possesses a 9-1 overall record and is currently in the midst of an eight-match winning streak. Colosio has not been beaten in a singles competition since Sept. 22, 2000, when she was topped in three sets by Ole Miss’ 28th ranked Julie DeRoo at the ITA Clay Court Championships.
In Tuesday’s No. 1 singles matchup, Colosio will be challenged by Florida State’s junior Alida Gallovits. Gallovits is tied for the nation’s No. 68 position with Cintia Tortorella from Pepperdine.
Last season, the Seminoles defeated LSU, 5-4, in Tallahassee, Fla., but the Lady Tigers lead the all-time series record at 5-4. LSU has not recorded a victory over the Lady Seminoles since 1990 when the Lady Tigers won on the road, 5-4.
