Friday’s LSU-Kansas State baseball game has been postponed due to rain. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 noon in Alex Box Stadium.
Fans must have a Game 1 ticket in order to be admitted to Saturday’s first game. The stadium will be cleared after the first game, and fans will be re-admitted with a Game 2 ticket for the second game.
The second game will start approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
Game 3 of the LSU-Kansas State series will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday, as originally scheduled. Saturday’s doubleheader marks the 2001 season opener for LSU, which will begin defense of its 2000 NCAA title. Kansas State enters Saturday’s twin bill with a 2-0 mark.
BATON ROUGE — The defending national champion LSU baseball team opens its 2001 season at noon on Saturday as the Tigers play host to Kansas State in Alex Box Stadium in a doubleheader.
Game 2 is set for 45 minutes after Game 1 and Game 3 begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.

LSU, which compiled a 52-17 mark in claiming the 2000 NCAA title, returns four starting position players and six pitchers from last year’s club.
Head coach Skip Bertman begins his 18th and final season at the helm of the LSU program with an 826-308-2 (.727) record. Bertman will retire from coaching at the end of the season to serve as the school’s athletic director.
Bertman said he doesn’t want his impending retirement to place an added burden upon his players.
“Naturally, I would like the boys to do well in my last time around,” he explained. “But, I don’t want to put any undue pressure on the players. It’s just begun to hit me that this is the last season, but it shouldn’t interfere with our preparation. We’re going to keep doing the things that have worked for me for 40 years.”
Senior right-hander Jason Scobie will start Game 1 for LSU. Scobie was 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA last season in a part-time starting role. Junior left-hander Shane Youman (3-0, 4.55 ERA) will start Game 2 for the Tigers. Bertman said he will announce LSU’s Game 3 starter after he has studied the Kansas State line-up in the first two contests.
Kansas State enters Friday’s game with a 2-0 mark. The Wildcats have defeated Doane College (11-3) and Southern Nazarene (9-6).
The Wildcats were 19-32 overall last season and placed 11th in the Big XII Conference with a 5-24 mark. Head coach Mike Clark is in his 15th season at KSU with a 367-399 (.479) record. KSU is expected to start left-hander Chad Duckers in Game 1, right-hander Luke Robertson in Game 2 and left-hander Brock Smith in Game 3.
LSU leads the all-time series with Kansas State, 9-7, as the teams first met? in 1967. Friday’s game, however, marks the first meeting between the schools since 1986, Bertman’s third season at LSU.
LSU is 15-2 under Bertman in season openers, including a 12-0 mark in season openers in Alex Box Stadium.
The Tigers haven’t lost a season opener since dropping a 3-1 decision to Auburn in the 1994 Winn-Dixie Showdown in the Louisiana Superdome.
